If you're going to do French-style steak and chips, which seems to be the thing that Cafe Rouge prides itself on, there are several things to consider: (1) offering a selection of differnet cuts of steak (2) understanding what the French mean by bleu, saignant, a point, bien cuit... not just assuming that a slightly overdone medium is right. (2) doing decent chips to accompany it, not something that tastes like McCain's! So, the steak and chips are usually disappointing. But that's not the end of the story, fortunately - I've had some very good dishes here (excellent crab cakes, a lovely dish of toulouse sausages and puy lentils, some nice lunchtime baguettes - but when the signature dish is so lacklustre one has to wonder about the marketing idea behnd this chain... Has a tolerable range of wines by the glass, expensive but some reasonable ones there. Would score higher if it could actually do a decent steack et frites. Rating: 50%
